Why petrol does so much damage to a diesel engine

Petrol is a solvent. Put it through that pump and it thins out and strips away the diesel film that was protecting everything. Metal then runs on metal. Diesel in a petrol engine is the less common and usually less severe mix. Petrol engines fire with spark plugs, and thick diesel fouls the plugs, clogs the filter and injectors, and tends to leave the car misfiring, smoking, and refusing to run properly. Inside a fuel system it does not burn, it crystallises, and those crystals are corrosive to fuel system components.
